Prop 8 Deferral Delays

altATHENS - While the overturning of the Defense of Marrige Act did away with federal discrimination best on sexual orientation, the deferral of California's Proposition 8 means that states will still be allowed to define marrige. University of Georgia law professor Diane Amann said that means that gay couples in Georgia, even if they went to a different state to be married, would not receive state benefits until another decision is made by the court which, could take some time. "If there is not a case of that nature already in process it will take a number of years," Amann said. "If you look at the California cases they originated in 2008 and wen through many layers of both state and federal cour before they got to the supreme court 5 years later in 2013."
